Antibody test

  • An antibody test is used to check the effectiveness of a Covid-19 vaccination or to prove a previous infection with the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus.
  • A drop of capillary blood from your finger is used to determine whether and to what extent you have corona antibodies in your body.
  • You will receive your test result by email after just 20 minutes.

How the antibody test works

An antibody test can tell you if it’s likely you’ve had COVID-19 before. It checks if your body has created antibodies to the virus. First, some blood is taken from the finger. This is done by making a small puncture in the fingertip. One to two drops of blood are usually sufficient. Similar to the antigen rapid test, this sample is applied to the test strip using a buffer solution. After a short incubation period, the result is read out by the machine and the presence or absence of antibodies in the blood is determined.
The antibody test measures the number of antibodies in the blood against the spike protein, a protein on the outer shell of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The level of concentration of the antibodies is called the antibody titer or vaccination titer. With the antibody test, you can, for example, check whether your corona vaccination was successful. Successful vaccination against corona is reflected in an increased number of antibodies in the blood.
If there is no vaccination protection, the antibody test can be used to detect a previous infection with Covid-19. The result confirms the level of antibodies in the blood after infection, both in the case of known diseases and after infections that may have remained undetected.
Please note: The antibody test does not show whether there is an acute infection with Covid-19. Our rapid antigen tests and PCR tests are suitable for determining such a disease.
You will receive your result by email after the processing time of around 20 minutes.

We also offer the possibility to test groups in our testing stations – even outside of our opening hours. Send us a request by e-mail or call us during our opening hours.

Questions about my antibody test

What does the antibody test determine?

The antibody test will check the presence of antibodies against the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, the cause of the disease Covid-19. The test measures qualitatively and quantitatively: both presence and number of antibodies in the blood.

How does the antibody test differ from an Antigen Rapid Test or a PCR test?

Unlike Antigen Rapid Tests and PCR tests, antibody tests do not detect whether an infection with the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus is currently present. Since the body only forms antibodies to diseases after some time, the antibody test is only meaningful after about 2 weeks after the infection or the (second) vaccination.

Do I need an appointment for the antibody test?

Like all tests at Coronatest.de, the antibody test is also possible without an appointment. You also can book an appointment with prior online payment if you prefer. To speed up the testing process, we recommend prior online registration and contactless payment.

What is the minimum age requirement to get tested?

There is no minimum age for the antibody test. In the case of minors, the finger prick must be performed by the parents or a person with parental authority.

When and how will I receive the result of the antibody test?

You will receive the result of your antibody test as soon as the machine evaluation of your blood sample is completed. This process takes about 20 minutes. As soon as your result is available, we will send it to the email address you provided during the registration process in accordance with data protection regulations.

Why should I get tested?

There are several reasons to perform an antibody test. You can check your vaccination status and measure your vaccination titer. You can also determine whether you may have already contracted Covid-19 unnoticed. Some countries require a minimum amount of antibodies in the blood for entry – you can check this quickly and easily to make sure you meet the travel requirements.

What does a positive result mean for me?

A positive result on an antibody test means that your body has developed defenses against the spike protein of SARS-CoV-2. If you have been vaccinated against the virus, it means that your vaccination was most likely successful. If you have not yet received a vaccination, the positive result means that you have most likely been infected with Covid-19 in the past.
Based on current knowledge, this means you are immune to SARS-CoV-2. It is currently uncertain how long your acquired immunity will last.
Regardless of your test result, please follow the recommended protective measures and hygiene tips provided by public health authorities to keep the risk of infection and further spread of Covid-19 low and to protect yourself and those around you.

What does a negative result mean for me?

A negative result on an antibody test means that your body has not (yet) developed defenses against the spike protein of SARS-CoV-2. If you have been vaccinated against the virus and your (second) vaccination was more than 2 weeks ago, this may mean that your vaccination was not successful. Additionally, the negative result means that you have most likely not been infected with Covid-19 in the past, or that a possible infection occurred so long ago that immunity is no longer present.
Based on current knowledge, this means you are currently not immune to SARS-CoV-2.
Please follow the recommended protective measures and hygiene tips of the health authorities to keep the risk of infection and further spread of Covid-19 low and to protect yourself and those around you.
